Visiting a country for the first time is an opportunity for us to verify whether our preconceived ideas about that country are true or not. For us, Mongolia was the homeland of the vast empire, which was conquered by Genghis Khan; a realm that eventually collapsed to its titan neighbours, China and Russia. As we approached Mongolia, our minds were filled with images of brave horsemen, frightening warriors and nomadic tribes in vast, scenic steppes.

Naadam is not only about men and their manly games. If at any point you get overwhelmed by all of these brutal competitions, which entail galloping on horseback, shooting arrows and throwing opponents to the ground, don’t be disheartened. The fun starts when the competitions are over! We dare say the games are just an excuse for the nomads of the country to come together and to eat and drink as one big family.
